Questions, answered
Everything organizers ask us before they list.
What counts as a community?
Any group of people who regularly gather. That's the whole definition. You don't need to be a business, a non-profit, or anything official.
If you organize events, workshops, classes, practices, shows, markets, networking or runs, then you're a community, and you belong here.
Public vs private communities
Two different jobs. Pick public if you want new people; private if the group is already who it's going to be.
Public
- Found by anyone browsing, searching or discovering
- Shows on the website as well as the app
- Anyone can follow and RSVP
- Your events reach people ranked into your category
Private
- Visible only to members, never in browsing or search
- People join by invitation
- Events stay inside the group
- Nothing about it is discoverable
Your member list is a separate setting either way: public, members-only, or hidden entirely. Hidden is the default, and most communities leave it there.
You can switch between the two later, so this isn't a decision to agonise over.
How do people find us?
Your audience finds you four ways:
- By interest: When someone joins we ask them to rank the five categories in order, not just tick boxes. A Tuesday run club surfaces first for the people who put movement at the top; a ceramics studio reaches the ones who ranked creatives first.
- By staying active: Communities with something coming up surface above the ones with an empty calendar. In Discover, having an upcoming event is part of the ranking. Keep posting and you stay near the top of your category; go quiet for a month and you sink.
- By following you: Once someone follows your community they're notified when you post something new. That's your audience, and it compounds. The people who came last month hear about this month first.
- By collaboration: Co-host an event with another community and it shows up for their followers as well as yours, on their page and in their feed. A studio and a café, two run clubs, a venue and the group performing in it. They have to accept the collaboration, so it's a real partnership rather than a tag, and the reach runs both ways.
How one person ranked them
- 1Movement & Fitness
- 2Creatives
- 3Socializing
- 4Entertainment & Games
- 5Education

Submit your community
About two minutes. Here's what to have ready:
- A name: What people already call you.
- A short description: A line or two on what you do and who it's for.
- A photo: Your logo, or a shot of the group. This is what people see first.
- A category: One of the five: Movement & Fitness, Creatives, Socializing, Entertainment & Games, Education.
It starts as a draft only you can see, so you can take your time and a half-finished page never gets seen. When you're happy with it, send it to us.
Reviewed within 24 hours
We read every submission to check it's a real group that meets somewhere real. You're notified either way, and nothing is public until it's approved.
Create your communityReady when you are
Create your community in the Gather app, add what's coming up, and send it to us. Once it's approved you're on the board, here on the website and to everyone browsing nearby.
